Henry Street's Mentoring Makes a Difference Program pairs high school seniors who have participated in our Expanded Horizons college prep and retention program — and who are applying to or have successfully gained acceptance to college — with mentors. The program provides critical support necessary for young adults to complete their college education.
Recent studies have shown that many youth entering college do not graduate within four to six years. Among the students we serve, family pressures, financial aid shortages, academic challenges and adjustment issues often contribute to a young person leaving school. However, mentoring programs have been shown to improve college retention and completion rates; students rely on mentors to help them solve everyday challenges — both at home and at school — that might otherwise become reasons for dropping out. Please consider providing this valuable life coaching to one of our amazing seniors as they embark upon their critical college experience!
Our mentors are asked to e-mail their mentees weekly, participate in at least two in-person gatherings and make a minimum commitment of two years to the program. Individuals selected to be mentors will receive training and continuous feedback and assistance from the e-mailing platform and Expanded Horizons staff.
Using this online platform, interested individuals can sign up and complete the mentoring application. The application takes no more than 20 minutes to complete.
