Awards Provided through Generosity of Abrons/Aranow Scholarship Fund

As family and friends looked on, some 81 college-bound youth received scholarships at the 10th Annual Youth Scholarship Awards Ceremony held on June 5 at 301 Henry Street.
The scholarships, averaging $1,000 each, were provided through the generosity of the Abrons/Aranow Scholarship Fund. Richard Abrons, head of the family foundation, was on hand to witness the ceremony.
The scholarship recipients will attend schools including Columbia University, New York University, the University of Chicago, Fordham University, Syracuse University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and many others.
Rousing talks were given by David Garza, Executive Director of Henry Street; Matthew Phifer, Director of Adolescent Educational Services; and Greg Rideout, Deputy Program Officer for Youth Services. Three scholarship recipients — Julani Rivera, Karl Floersh and Joseph Mercado — addressed the audience, expressing gratitude for both the academic support they received accessing college and the financial support provided by the scholarships.
The award winners, all participants in Henry Street programs, were selected based on an essay they wrote, their grades, degree of involvement in Henry Street activities, and financial need. Some students are rising college freshmen; others are "repeat" winners and have already completed one or more years of college.
