More than 50 parents attended the opening of Henry Street’s Parent Center Satellite at PS 142 on October 14, where they enjoyed coffee, bagels and an introduction to the innovative – and super convenient — new program.

The Center, located in a cheerful room on the school’s main floor, will provide workshops and information for parents — right in their child’s school.  It is a program of Henry Street’s Parent Center, located several blocks from the school.

Parents were greeted by PS 142 Principal Daphna Gutman, Parent Center Director Tera Gurney and David Garza, Executive Director of Henry Street, who noted that the center is an excellent example of integrated programming and promised the Settlement’s full support.  He went even further, offering parents free tickets to Wilderness, an upcoming performance at the Abrons Arts Center, to great applause.

Tera Gurney told those assembled that the center’s first workshop, focusing on communication and homework, will be held on October 21, and distributed a calendar for drop-in hours. She noted that the center will be staffed by social workers fluent in English, Spanish and Chinese, and that information on all Henry Street programs will be available.  She also thanked NYC Mammas Give Back, a nonprofit group that provided support to furnish the room with toys and books.

The idea of the satellite center was conceived from a conversation between Daphna Gutman and Kelly Lennon-Martucci, Director of Henry Street’s School Based Mental Health Clinics (which operates a clinic at that school).  When Gutman mentioned to Lennon-Martucci that the students needed homework help, and that parents needed access to nutrition support and other services, she replied, “We do that at Henry Street!” The two realized that the most effective way to connect the families and the Settlement was to open a satellite of the Parent Center right in the school.
