Since 1968 Henry Street Settlement has been a site for this innovative United Parcel Service management training program. Every summer 16 UPS managers are immersed in the urban environment of the Lower East Side with the intention of gaining some sensitivity to the social effects of poverty that can be applied to employment practices in their own communities.

Online Scrapbooks | As each Intern class participates in the program, they document their work in the community, the sights they've visited and the people they've met with photographs. Choose a scrapbook below to see the UPS program through their eyes.

Field Work Experiences |
 | During their internships, the participants live in modest dorms at the Settlement. After being introduced to Henry Street's services, they select a program to work with, including:
 |
Off-site Visits |
 | Interns also spend a fair amount of time away from the Settlement visiting social service, cultural and rehabilitation agencies around the city that offer exposure to a wide range of human situations. These include the Chinese Planning Council, Sing Sing New York State Correctional Facility, Bellevue Hospital Emergency Room, and Sienna House.

Mutual Benefit |
 | In recent years interns have gotten a good look at typical gender, age and ethnic diversity of job seekers by touring the UPS operation centers in New York City and New Jersey with participants in Henry Street's Youth Employment Program. The young people, many of whom never considered themselves candidates for corporate careers, can benefit profoundly from the training and mentoring they receive from CIP interns. Since 1994, approximately 125 Henry Street clients have been offered jobs at UPS.
