Community Consultation Center (CCC) first started its AIDS work in 1982 and in 1987 was designated by the New York City Department of Mental Health as the primary provider for AIDS Mental Health Services for New York City's Lower East Side. In 1988 the Clinic started the first school based bereavement and support groups for non-infected children of parents who died of AIDS.  The Clinic brought national attention to the plight of AIDS orphans and developed a unique three generational clinical model in working with the child, HIV infected parent, grandparents and extended family to assure the physical and psychological survivorship of orphaned children within their extended families. This groundbreaking AIDS work was instrumental in influencing AIDS public policy which led to the expansion of legislated care and services to families affected by AIDS.

With the advent of medical breakthroughs, the AIDS team continues to develop strategies to help families and children cope with the psychological, sociological and medical challenges of a chronic illness.

The Clinic offers the following HIV/AIDS services:

  • Individual, family and group therapy (home or clinic based)
  • Crisis intervention
  • Psychological testing
  • Psychiatric consultation and related medications
  • Case management and advocacy with schools, courts, social services, hospitals, housing, preventive agencies
  • Educational enrichment for school age and teen-age youth
  • Social/Recreational events for families and children
  • Family housing program in collaboration with New York City Housing Authority and HIV/AIDS Services Administration
  • Workshops on HIV/AIDS issues conducted by the team for community and professional groups
  • Services are free to those who do not have insurance coverage
  • The multi-ethnic professional staff provides services in English, Spanish, three dialects of Chinese, Italian, Sicilian, German, and Portuguese.
