| The Henry Street Settlement and Recycle-a-Bicycle, Inc. together sponsor a remarkable youth development project that combines environmental education with basic business concepts. Project participants take donated bicycles, repair them, and reintroduce them into the community via Earn-a-Bike programs, charitable organizations, and sales at the shop. They also help run two Recycle-A-Bicycle stores — located in Manhattan and the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn — and take classes in bike mechanics and environmental conservation.
Since its inception in 1995, Recycle-A-Bicycle has worked with more than 250 young people. The initiative has also removed an astonishing 109 tons from the city's waste stream through refurbishment and resale, as well as reprocessing arrangements with scrap metal dealers and the eco-conscious design firm Gaelyn & Cianfarani.
Customers may visit the Recycle-A-Bicycle stores and Web site to purchase fully refurbished bicycles priced 50% less than new models. Bikes are shipped via UPS.
