Opening Our Own Doors

By Chelsea Jupin

A record number of people – nearly 200 individuals — braved a cold, damp Saturday to tour Henry Street’s historic headquarters during Open House New York on October 11.

Visitors were treated to a brief, illustrated talk (including a ghost story) and a tour of our buildings, featuring the original visiting nurse dorm rooms; our dining room where the NAACP was founded; and our garden, the site of one of the first playgrounds in the nation.

Henry Street Settlement was a featured site in this year’s Open House New York, which gives New Yorkers access to hundreds of New York locations varying from the historical to innovative and cutting-edge newer buildings.  This is Henry Street Settlement’s fifth year participating in Open House New York.
