FREE Storm Recovery Legal Services

FREE Storm Recovery Legal Services will be available to Hurricane Sandy victims on Tuesday, July 22, from 3 to 7 p.m.
The free legal counseling will take place at Henry Street Settlement’s Boys & Girls Republic, 888 East Sixth Street (Avenue D), and is provided by the New York Legal Assistance Group, NYS Prepare, and NYC Service.
Interpreter services will be available, but participants must RSVP in advance to specify the language needed. Participants should RSVP online or by calling NYLAG’s Storm Response Hotline at 212-584-3365.
Counseling will be available for the following services:
FEMA Benefits
- Understanding FEMA and other disaster program benefits
- Appealing denied claims
- Disputing FEMA recoupment (repayment) letters
Housing
- Eligibility for housing vouchers
- Landlord/tenant disputes, including wrongful evictions
- Mortgage issues for affected homes, including foreclosure
Homeowner’s and Flood Insurance
- Obtaining an increase in insurance proceeds
- Challenging coverage denials
- Insurance mediation and lawsuits
Consumer Protection
- Contractor and other disaster-related frauds
- Financial and debt counseling
- Bankruptcies and credit problems
Build it Back and New York Rising
- Understanding Build It Back and New York Rising
- Resolving problems impacting eligibility
