It was September madness at Henry Street’s  2015 Dunk and Donate basketball tournament held on September 12! Six teams hit the court at Boys & Girls Republic (BGR) to raise funds youth programs at the site.

The Cellucor team —most of whose members traveled all the way from Austin, Texas, to compete—won the tournament after defeating the Park Slope Boys in a fierce championship game, winning 23-22 in the last few seconds. Teams from First Manhattan Consulting Group, Safra National Bank, Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. and Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow were also fierce competitors in the day’s tournament-style games.

During the three-point shot competition was held halfway through the tournament, participants anted up $100 each for ten chances to shoot from the three point line or sponsor youth from BGR to shoot in their stead. The ambitious athletes raised an additional $700 with Norqui Muñoz winning the contest.

Three BGR youth also helped to kick off the festivities, thanking the participants and telling them that BGR is their “second home,” and the youth and staff there “are like family.”

David Garza, Executive Director of Henry Street, expressed his gratitude to the event sponsors and participants. “BGR helps its 700 members to lead better lives through academic support, sports, the arts and comprehensive case management. Our unique self-government model brings all of these important program elements into play in a way that stays with our children for life. This wouldn’t be possible without your support,” he said.

Family and friends of the teams, along with youth from BGR and Henry Street staff watched the games, enjoyed a catered lunch from Katz’s Deli and spent time in BGR’s art room, playroom and computer lab.
