Garza Honored for Promoting Equality

By Ryan Wenzel

Henry Street Executive Director David Garza was honored by Asian Americans for Equality with a 2013 Dream of Equality at AAFE’s 39th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration on March 21, 2013.

The event, held in a spacious banquet hall at Jing Fong Restaurant, focused on “overcoming obstacles with resiliency and strength.” Garza was praised for the Settlement’s work toward promoting equality by opening doors of opportunity to all residents of the Lower East Side. AAFE singled out Henry Street’s response to Hurricane Sandy, when the Settlement provided Lower East Side residents with food, water, blankets and other assistance in the wake of the storm.

The AAFE is a non-profit founded in 1974 to aid Asian Americans in New York and the nation. Other honorees at the event were Sheena Wright, President and CEO, United Way of New York City; U.S. Congress Members Joseph Crowley and Grace Meng; and State Assembly Member Ron Kim.
