Keeping The Lights On After-School

By Chelsea Jupin

Over 150 after-school students and staff participated in Lights on After-School — an annual, nationwide rally to spread awareness about the importance of after-school services — held in the Settlement’s Youth Services building at 301 Henry Street on October 23.

Students from all five of Henry Street after-school sites attended to celebrate the after-school programs that Henry Street Settlement offers across the Lower East Side.

After-School Champion Awards were presented Henry Street Settlement staff members Roxana Tetenbaum and Jennifer Silverman, and the children were addressed by Henry Street Settlement Executive Director David Garza and after-school alumna Jaydee Sanchez, now employed at PS20.

Garza and Katha Cato, Henry Street’s Program Director for After-School & Summer Camp Services, read proclamations honoring Lights On After-School, presented by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, Speaker of the New York State Assembly Sheldon Silver, and New York State Senator Daniel Squadron, who sent a representative to present the proclamation at the event.
