Henry Street Settlement opens doors of opportunity for Lower East Side residents and other New Yorkers through social service, arts, and health care programs.
The after-school program at P.S. 20, located at 166 Essex Street (at Houston Street), serves students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Each after-school class is led by a Group Leader and Group Aide who engage participants in a variety of age-appropriate activities, including homework help, individual and group counseling, structured recreation and visual arts activities. P.S. 20 Department of Education teachers partner with the Group Leaders on special projects that address academic enrichment, research, technology and test preparation. Henry Street Settlement Teaching Artists also partner with the Group Leaders on projects that extend and enrich learning and positively influence children’s social and emotional development through dance, architecture, storytelling, music, theater and visual arts.
